Children’s Sunday School

Led by Sunday School Staff

When: Sunday mornings, at 9:15 AM

PK- K: Room 202

1st- 3rd: Room 205

4th-6th: Room 204

Children’s Ministry at First United Methodist Church is committed to building community among the families and friends of FUMC, the Church, and the world. We aim to create a safe place for all children and their parents to explore their relationships with God, and to discover what it means to be faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in the world today.

The Preschool and Kindergarten class jump right into fun activities, games, crafts, and music each Sunday, which all center around well-known stories and people from the Bible.

Our 1st-3rd grade children learn to dive deeper into their Christian Community and Faith. Each Sunday they participate in games, crafts, and activities that center around a Bible story and theme. The class explores ways that they can be like Jesus for others.

The 4th-6th grade students dig into the many questions that they have surrounding their faith and life. Each week they participate in activities surrounding multiple Bible passages. They also have great discussions where they can explore and discover what it means to live their faith on a day-to-day basis.

Participation in all Children’s Ministries at FUMC is open to all children and their families, regardless of membership to FUMC of Iowa City. We strive to create a community that is open to all persons, without exception.

Come join the fun at FUMC Sunday School!

New Member Class

When: Four times each year

Our New Member class is open to anyone interested in becoming a member of FUMC. It is designed to assist folks with a deeper understanding about the United Methodist Church, our membership vows, and ways to become more engaged in the ministries of our congregation.

The New Member Class is offered quarterly through the year. For more information, contact Claire Bartleson at (319) 337-2857 or at .

Sanctuary Band

When: Thursdays, at 7- 8:30PM

Where: Sanctuary

The Sanctuary Band provides vocal and instrumental music leadership for our Sanctuary Service and also performs at retirement residences throughout the year. Members of the Sanctuary Band also spend time in devotion, prayer, and care for one another each week. Each week includes about four hours of personal practice, band rehearsal, and worship time.  The Sanctuary Band does not follow written music scores: both vocalists and instrumentalists are expected to utilize lead-sheets for each song. Instrumentalists will need their own instruments, but the most important requirement is to have a “Love for God, neighbor and self.”
