Worship and Music

Staff Member:
Rebekah Ahrens
Lay Leader:
Suzanne Stock

This ministry empowers the laity so that they can contribute both leadership and behind –the-scene efforts to support our three unique and meaningful worship services each week. Volunteers take on such roles as recruiting ushers, preparing communion, coordinating those who operate the A-V equipment, and scheduling and training liturgists.

Solo and Ensemble Musical Presentation

Members and friends are encouraged to contact Samuel Kwok, the Director of Worship and Music Ministries to schedule a musical offering in our worship services.

Instruments at FUMC

The rich tradition of instrumental music has been lovingly supported by gifts, memorials, bequests, and budget line items with the church. The instruments in the church serve as an essential resource for services and celebrations and as such receive regular professional maintenance and tuning.

  • THE ORGAN – Part of the church’s 150th year renovation project, it is a three-manual tracker Holtkamp with 43 ranks, 33 stops, and 2,296 pipes.
  • PIANOS – A 1987 Baldwin grand “L” for the Sanctuary; a 1972 Yamaha upright “U1” for the Fellowship Hall, and a 1968 Yamaha studio “P2” for the choir room.
  • HANDBELL & HANDCHIME SETS – A five-octave 1982 Schulmerich, a three-octave 1973 Malmark, and a five-octave 2003 Malmark handchime set along with assorted mallets and percussion instruments. Recently, we received a three-octave set of Schulmerich from the former members of Hope UMC. Thanks to the great support of FUMC Foundation for spending $7,000 to do a complete refurbishment of our five-octave 1982 Schulmerich Handbell set.

Those interested in sharing their musical gifts are invited to contact Koi Hin Samuel Kwok, our Director of Worship & Music Ministries at 338-7653 or samuel-kwok@icfirstchurch.org.

Children serve by lighting the candles for worship services each Sunday.

Operate the sound board or projection system; audio or video tape the service; edit the audio tape for radio broadcast and/or edit the video tape for TV broadcast.

Sundays 4:30-5:30 p.m. in the Choir Room

For many children, singing in choir is the beginning of a life filled with service to God through the use of their gifts and talents. The commitment to attending rehearsals, the chance to learn and improve music skills, to worship God, and the friendships that come as the children sing, play, and have fun together are an important foundation for a lifetime of involvement in the church.

Prepare the elements of Communion; take the elements to the Sanctuary; put away materials after the service.

Assist in the serving of Communion once a month.

Input prayers and hymns into a Mac computer to be used by the projection system.

Assist in the leading of worship by leading prayers and reading Scripture.

Tuesdays 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Bell Room

This handbell and handchime ensemble is open to all adults. Prior handbell experience and ability to read music is helpful, but not necessary. They present music a few times a year at the Cornerstone and Koinonia worship services. They will also give recitals in our community.

Assist as ushers, greeters, or Communion servers for the 9:15 Sanctuary service.

Cornerstone (8:00–8:50 a.m.)

This Worship Service features the use of modern and traditional liturgy, hymns, and prayers, while remaining true to our United Methodist worship heritage. The music ministry features Organist Michael Davidson along with a variety of vocal and instrumental ensembles, including our bell and chime choirs.

Sanctuary (9:15-10:00 a.m.)

Looking for a casual, up-beat worship service where you are welcomed? This service features worship songs led by the Sanctuary Band.

Wednesdays 7-8:30 p.m. & Sundays 10:00-10:20 a.m. in the Choir Room

The Chancel Choir traces its roots to the founding of FUMC and today maintains a program of exceptional music. The choir’s repertoire encompasses a wide variety of musical styles ranging from traditional anthems by great composers to fine selections by leading contemporary Christian composers.

Mondays 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary

The Joyful Chimers was established in 2004. This ensemble is open to adults who enjoy to play traditional hymn arrangements. Musical knowledge is helpful but not required. We play a few times a year during the 10:30 a.m. worship service from October to June and also play in special Christmas and Lenten worship services. We rehearse on Monday afternoons from September to June. We pray and share our joys together every week.  We also have joyful breakfast outings several times a year. This is a very joyful group!

Thursdays 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary

Sundays 8:30-9:00 a.m. in the Bell Room

Greet and hand out bulletins before each service, collect offering, and assist worshipers as needed.

Both weddings and funerals are performed in the Sanctuary of our church. Arrangements for either should be made through the church office and in consultation with one of the pastors. Funerals performed at the church take precedence over all other scheduled activities. Arrangements may also be made for visitations and for fellowship luncheons.

Design and arrange flowers, banners, paraments, and other creative arts that enhance our worship experience.

Sundays 3:00-4:30 p.m. in the Bell Room

This ensemble is open to junior and senior high school students. These young people will learn handbell and handchime techniques, music reading, and musicianship by playing contemporary arrangements of Christian hymns and songs in this ensemble. They present music a few times a year during Sunday woship service.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to praise and worship God!
